A horse for a cause
The team at WW are always keen to get behind a good cause.
This year New Zealand Riding for the Disabled ran a “Gingerbread Horse” campaign and the partners and staff determined to become business bakers. Staff members baked, decorated and sold gingerbread horses to raise funds for South Auckland NZRDA.
NZRDA is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation which provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy, stimulating, therapeutic horse riding and horse related activities. The core purpose is to provide interaction with horses to develop increased ability, independence and self-esteem for children and adults with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.
Our Highbrook lunchroom/kitchen was overtaken by a pony production line involving a significant number of staff baking and decorating (and the odd partner decorating) gingerbread horses. Other members of the firm then went out into the Highbrook community and sold the completed biscuits. Our neighbours were very generous and we were able to raise $742.00 which, when matched by the partners, resulted in a $1,500 donation to RDA.
From an initial goal of baking and selling 50 gingerbread horses we quickly realised that we could, and should, sell significantly more. We met our target sales twice through the campaign and ended up selling over 350 gingerbread horses.
We’re pretty impressed with our achievement. It was very satisfying for us to work as a team on non-legal matters, whilst doing our bit for a deserving charity.
Watch out for our next community initiative.
